W Jan 17: Introduction to course/syllabus.
Homework: Print and read “Poetics and Narrativity: How Texts Tell Stories”
M Jan 22: Meet in HBC 227 computer cluster. Begin set up of weblogs and aggregators. Quiz and discuss Eubanks’ piece.
Homework: Select either #4 or #5 on page 53 of his chapter and begin work on it for Monday. You should bring to class on Monday the Eubanks’ piece as well as a hard copy of the text(s) you’ll use for the exercise you’ve chosen.
W Jan 24: Meet in HBC 227. Finish setting up blogs/aggregators. Work on the exercises-in-progress from page 53 of Eubanks’ piece. Review of library web site. Discuss possible topics for unit 1.
Homework: Finish Eubanks’ exercise. Read pages 56-76 in Ballenger. Find one text/article/example for your annotated bibliography and bring it to class on Monday. Be prepared to discuss your search.
M Jan 29: (Back in the regular room). Work on taking reading notes and constructing annotations (page 247 Ballenger for simple citations). Discuss individual search processes. Exercise 4.2 in Ballenger (“Reclaiming Your Topic” page 170).
Homework: Finish finding any last sources. Polish the Annotated Bibliography, making sure your formatting and spacing are correct and that there are no grammatical errors in your annotations.
W Jan 31: Annotated Bibliography Due.
Homework: This is a change from the original calendar. Print and read “Intertextuality: How Texts Rely on Other Texts” by Charles Bazerman from the course site. Draft an initial, tentative introduction to your content analysis essay.
M Feb 5: Book Check Day. Bring tentative introductions to class for studio workshop. Discuss Bazerman’s “Intertextuality.”
Homework: Draft one body paragraph of your analysis essay. Consider applying Eubanks’ method as an invention technique.
W Feb 7: Apply/examine the techniques of intertextual representation discussed by Bazerman to some examples of research. Studio workshop body paragraphs.
Homework: Work on Unit 2 Essay.
M Feb 12-W Feb 14: Both days in-class studio workshop of body paragraphs. Homework for Monday Feb 19: Finish Unit 2 Essay and read the preface and Chapter 1 of Weinberger’s Small Pieces Loosely Joined.
M Feb 19: We will meet in HBC 009. Please bring an electronic copy of your essay with you, either on a jump drive or by emailing it to yourself (the machines in the clusters do not have floppy drives). Or you can upload it to your blog. However you manage it, make sure you’ve got a copy for us to work with. Quiz on Preface and Chapter 1. Discuss reading. Talk about Unit 3 Project
Homework: Chapter 2 and 3 of Weinberger. Begin to consider possible offshoot topics that you might be interested in covering for the extended research project (Unit 3).
W Feb 21: Quiz. Discuss reading. Discuss initial topic ideas.
Homework: Chapters 4, 5 and 6.
M Feb 26: Quiz. Discuss reading.
Homework: Chapters 7 and 8. Decide on a tentative topic for your extended research project and begin initial search for resources. Bring 2 possible texts with all notes to class on Wednesday.
W Feb 28: Meet in HBC 227. Class activity on evaluating sources using pages 165-177 in The Writer’s Harbrace Handbook (so please bring it to class).Constructing abstracts.
Homework: Continue research.
M Mar 5: Possible research methodologies/strategies. Survey, interview, other non-textual resourcing techniques.
Homework: Continue research. Read pages 208-211 in Ballenger. Complete Exercise 5.1 “Dissecting the Fish” (three bullet-point steps). Then write a tentative abstract for your extended research project.
